The Building EQ Committee has many exciting initiatives underway in Society Year 2021-22. I want to take this minute to inform you of some of these..
The Building EQ web pages on the ASHRAE website (http://www.ashrae.org/BuildingEQ) have many resources available including several 10-15 minute podcasts that introduce both the In Operation and As Designed assessments. There is also a 30 minute training video on how to use the Building EQ Portal. Two Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents provide guidance to assist your chapter’s outreach efforts in supporting university-based and grassroots-driven building energy assessments. These resources provide you with opportunities to comply with PAOE Presidential Initiatives such as building operations, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
More than 2,800 HVACR industry professionals, building systems engineers, architects, contractors and students, gathered in Las Vegas and virtually from January 29 – February 2 for the 2022 ASHRAE Winter Conference. Registered conference attendees were provided entry to the co-sponsored AHR Expo, held January 31 – February 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“This year’s conference and expo marked the first time that the Society has been together for our Winter Conference in two years and the return to the AHR Expo after last year’s cancellation,” said 2021-22 ASHRAE President Mick Schwedler, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, LEED AP. “While the numbers are expectedly lower than past conferences, in-person attendance still exceeded our expectations and our virtual attendees added a welcomed dynamic to our sessions. We are grateful to everyone involved in establishing a comprehensive health and safety plan for our attendees, which included guidance provided by the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force.”
On September 1, 2021, the ASHRAE UK Midlands Chapter held a Student Competition and Life Members event to honour the contributions of ASHRAE Life Members in their chapter. For their outstanding contribution to the ASHRAE association, all life members received certificates of recognition. Life members shared stories of how they got started in the ASHRAE and how they were able to stay as members for 35 years or more. The event was beneficial to all students and members of ASHRAE.

ASHRAE believes Student members are the future of our society and our industry. With this in mind, on September 1, 2021, ASHRAE UK Midlands YEA and Student Activities held a student research paper competition online. Undergraduates, Masters, and PhDs were all eligible to compete. Students from Loughborough, Demontford, and Cardiff competed and presented their research theses in the competition. The research topics comprised sustainability, zero energy, Indoor environmental quality, IoT, electrical services, closed-loop heating systems, and intelligent control. Within the time limit of 5 minutes for each participant, all of the pupils performed admirably. The competition's major requirement was that students show their work in 5 minutes with just 3 slides. The student's presentation was assessed by an industrial judging panel made up of representatives from Vexo, Pick Everard, IES, Hilson Moran, and Crookes Walker. The winners received awards of about £1000 from ASHRAE UK Midlands.
The student competition winners are listed below.
