Ashrae Presidential Address 2019
Darryl K Boyce - Ashrae President is the recipient of ASHRAE’s Distinguished Service Award, Exceptional Service Award and Regional Award of Merit.
His theme for the Society year is Building for People and Performance. Achieving Operational Excellence. “We must ensure operational performance for the people that live, work, and interact in buildings,” said Boyce. With a long career spanning design and facilities management his presidential address is a clarion call for buildings that do more to facilitate the requirements of the people we design and construct them for. “People must succeed within the buildings we create. Let’s ensure we take the steps needed to achieve effective operational performance and operator experience.”
This is a message that resonates in an industry where the way people use buildings is changing, creating ever changing demands on them, which in turn requires professionals in building services to be more savvy in understanding what happens in use and how we can facilitate designs that meet the needs of users.
Supporting Darryl is Michael J Wigington of J Dunton Associates. Michael will reprise the excellent and well received paper he delivered to CIBSE Technical Symposium in 2017 on the often forgotten topic of Cyber Security. With the growing use of IoT and open network protocols, BMS and networked plant systems systems are often last and sometimes never receive updates to fix vulnerabilities. Michael discusses the applicability of cyber security to BACS and BMS systems and outlines key concepts that can be adapted from enterprise networks and industrial control systems (ICS) in order to improve security. His presentation looks at how availability and resilience, as understood by building services engineers, can be expanded to include controls networks and considers how failure to consider cyber security has the potential to cause system failures in organisational critical facilities.
